The Bartlett Family Adventure

The Bartlett Family Adventure is all about the moments that take my breath away as I grow in the glory of God, and live my life to the best of my ability while raising two rowdy boys. This blog is not just about me, it also includes stories of my family's daily adventures. We home school our boys, are trying to grow our fruits and vegetables, we are all on a journey to God, we are trying to live sustainably, and most importantly love the life we lead. Sometimes we stumble, but mostly I like to think we prevail. I am blogging to keep a sort of shared journal. Our life may be messy but it is perfect.

Ninth Granny Square

Here is September's granny square. I think this one looks fun. Remember that if you do not like the square for the month you can do eight of your favorite square so far. Obviously this not a race or else I would be tailing the at the very end. Please take your time and be kind to yourself. I am looking forward to making this square. This can be done in one color, two colors, or three like it is shown in the video. If you are planning on doing a solid color or just two colors just watch the video all the way through so that you know what to expect.

Have fun!

I hope your day is filled with inspiration, love, and laughter. Be well my friends.

Eighth Granny Square

Here is another granny square. I know I am a little late posting this months granny square, I hope you will forgive me. I decided to do another semi solid square for a symmetry, and so that you will have another type of square to decorate with all of the appliques you have made so far. Only two more granny squares until we start sewing them together. I hope you will share your finished projects with me. I will update these as I get caught up with them

How about some whales applique.
And Fish appliques
And a cute little duck

Cherries!

I feel a little guilty for posting late so I wanted to make it up to you by giving you extra applique videos. I hope you find something you like.

I hope your day is filled with inspiration, love and laughter. Be well my friends

Fourth Granny Square

It's April! How are you doing so far? If you are a little behind don't worry there is still time to catch up. Besides it is not a race to the finish. Take your time all of these posts will be here when you are ready to move on to the next square. As you may already know my Birthday is in April. I decided that I wanted flowers. This is my favorite square so far. I love how it looks in one solid color and in multi-colors. I hope you like it as much as I do. It is easier than it looks. I promise.

You can find the written pattern here
Sometimes I find it helpful just to read the pattern after I have made a couple of these squares with the video.

My squares look a little wonky this month. I am not worried. If your squares look a little wonky from time to time just go with it. Everything will work out in the end.

The lady who makes this video is very soft spoken so be prepared to turn up the volume. Also she tells you the instructions as she is doing it so you may want to watch the video all the way through first. I am going to type out the instructions so that it might help follow along.

1. Start with a magic ring
(here is a video if you're not quite sure how to do a magic loop)
5 single crochets into the magic ring close the ring with a slip stitch.
2. Chain 1. two single crochets in every stitch. slip stitch to first single crochet
3.Chain 1, two single crochets in every stitch then slip stitch to first single crochet
4.You can change color here or stay with a single color. Chain 1, *single crochet in 3, two single crochets in the next stitch* repeat *-* Slip stitch to first single crochet
5. In the next stitch half double crochet, double crochet, triple crochet chain two in next single crochet triple crochet, double crochet, half double crochet (your first ear). skip next stitch, Single crochet in next four stitches skip a stitch. half double crochet, double crochet, triple crochet, chain two and in next stitch triple crochet, double crochet, half double crochet (The second ear!)slip stitch into next stitch. The lady says you can stop here or finish the round with single crochets until you reach the first ear then end with a slip stitch.. That is what I did.

6. Now for the eyes. Start with a magic ring than three single crochets into the ring, slip stitch into first single crochet.
7. two single crochets into every stitch slip stitch to finish
8. Repeat rows 6 and seven to make two eyes
For the record I find it hard to work with dark colors like black and brown. For some reason the stitches are hard to see so I recommend using a light color for the eyes. If you struggle making the eyes you can always sew on little buttons instead.
For the beak I chained three and then one single crochet in the middle and then chained one.
Also I used a G/4mm hook. Use a bigger hook to make it easier.
Good luck!
I think it looks better when you change the color. That is up to you.

I hope your day is filled with inspiration, love, and laughter. Be well my friends.

The third granny square

Hello Friends. I hope you are enjoying our crochet along granny square adventure. For March I decided to do a solid square. This way we can play with the appliques for both this month and the coming months . This square is easy to do but it does a little more time than the last two squares. It will be worth the extra work, I promise. If you have any questions or concerns about any part of the process please feel free to ask in the comments and I will answer as soon as I see the message. I really am happy to help. Also it is not to late to get started on the granny square blanket. Granny square project details, first granny square, and   The first two squares are super easy to and you will be able to catch up in no time. So here is the video for our third granny square.

I thought these little octopuses were cute. I have boys so I tend to gravitate towards boy stuff.
So I checked the March calender to see what was coming up and what do you know Saint Patrick's Day!

Also the first day of spring is on the 20th this month. So we have to have an easy flower to celebrate.
You can make these bigger or smaller simply by changing your hook size. They are quick to work up and when you are finished you have a cute flower that you can make into a pin, hair clip, or add it to any project you are working on like a hat or maybe a granny square.

You do not have to make all of the appliques. I wanted to post a little something for everyone. If you do not like any of the appliques you do not have to make any of them. It is your blanket make it the way you like it. Do what will make you happy.

Here are my granny squares. I am really happy with how they turned out.
To be honest I love my multi purple square the most.

A simple flower that goes great on anything.

Well I added an extra leaf for luck.

Hello Octopus.

All of the little appliques took less than twenty minutes to work up. They are easy to make and will make you look very clever to non-crocheters. Have fun. If you think of anything that you would like to see on here just let me know. I will see what I can do. To be honest as of right now youtube does not have appliques for a penguin or a TARDIS. I am working on my very first written pattern. I hope to share it with you when I get it perfected. Right now there are still a few kinks to work out.

I hope your day is filled with inspiration, love, and laughter. Be well my friend.

Hearts for inspiration

I wanted to do an extra post on the heart video that I did not have any examples for. I felt bad for not working one up for you for the second granny square. Since Valentine's Day is coming I will post some inspiration pictures on things you can do with crochet hearts plus the hearts I worked up for you. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I am happy to help when I can.

Pinterest inspiration = Pinspiration? No, You are completly right it does't quite work.

For our purposes we are using them to decorate a granny square or two or not. They are your hearts make them in your favorite color or make a key chian or if you are not a big heart fan feel free to skip it altogether. You can use a smaller crochet hook and you will get a small heart or you can use a bigger hook for a bigger heart (in case you really like the bobby pin idea and need little tiny hearts).  Do what makes you happy.

Here is the video again so that you do not have to go look for it.

To be honest this heart starts out a little wonky mostly because there is very little to hold on to but just keep going, pause the video so you can do your stitches with Bobwilson123 (I love her videos. A big Thank you to her for teaching us) take your time. I am sure that you are doing wonderful. Just perfect. Trust me.

I love two hearts in a square, like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun.
Honestly I put my hearts a little to close to the edge which is why the corners look a bit out of shape but I am confident that once I sew the squares together that it will look fine. So really if your squares look a little wonky not to worry they will be fine once we put them all together.

I hope that your day is filled with inspiration, love, and laughter. Be well my friends.

Keeping the wheels turning

I know I have been quite on my blog lately but I promise I have been busy with college, home school, a little house keeping, reading, and well a few other things. . .
This is a duct tape dress form. Turns out this is my good side.
Straight on I look well a little lumpy and
the I have an urge to get on the treadmill.
In theory it will help me make clothes that fit my body.
But I still want to lose 10-20 pounds.
Then I want a less lumpy dress form.
This will one day be a dress in theory.
Notice the lack of planets in the fabric.
It is going to be cute!
maybe.
hopefully
oh, dear.

I have been working on log cabin blankets.
As you can see this one is for Callie.
My friend is desperately waiting her arrival.

I love embroidery but I am a little rusty.
I hope they don't mind that it is a little sloppy
I did by hand free style.

An idea of what the whole blanket looks like.
It is not finished.

Callie has a big sister.
This is her blanket.
It is not even close to being finished.
Her Dad will be here in two weeks.
I want him to take them home.
I better get working.
I have school work!
Eek!!
Where the cuting happens.

A box of yarn, I am going to mail this out soon.

This is a shawl.
Oh will be
someday.

It takes a long time
It takes a lot of yarn
It takes the fun out of Crochet.
It is for my Mother-in-Law.

These are the same size
I do not know why the right looks bigger.
They are baby flip flops
for Callie
Oh, dear...

That is what I have been up too lately. Not to mention the cooking, I found a lovely recipe for sweetened condensed milk, cream of mushroom soup you add to recipes to make them amazing, and more.

Here is your song of the day
Proud Mary
What is better then Tina Turner?
Nothing.
Rolling, Rolling, Rolling on the river

I hope you are having a wonderful day filled with love and laughter. Be well my friends.

Baby Flip flops

I know I have been quiet around here over the last week. My husband was home for a very long weekend and I was happy to spend the time with him. Also I got distracted by a new pattern I got from http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/crocheting/Accessory/Flip-Flops-for-Baby-Crochet-Pattern/1479.

I have a friend who is going to have a little baby girl. They live on an island. So I wanted to make these sweet flip flops for the baby. I am sure they will be to big for their little one but she will grow into them.

I hope they like these because I kind of want to make another pair or two for the baby.

I hope you are having a wonderful day filled with love and laughter. Be well my friends.

Flared Rose

Today's flower is the Flared Rose from the book 100 Flowers to Knit and Crochet.
http://issuu.com/lesliss/docs/100_flowers_to_knit_and_crochet/1

Today there are no inspirational pictures because I think that a Flared Rose is only found in crafts. It was an easy flower to make. Mine is a little too big for a hair clip so it will go into a box for a friend of mine who asked for a box of flowers. Between you an me I have been slacking on her box of flowers. It is one down, a bazillion to go.

Here is my flared rose.

Turns out red is not the best color to photograph

I hope you have a wonderful day filled with love and laughter. Be well my friend.

This Chrysanthemum Flower was not my favorite. In fact as soon as I took the picture I pulled the yarn and made it disapear. Again here is the link to the bookhttp://issuu.com/lesliss/docs/100_flowers_to_knit_and_crochet/1

Here is my flower. . .
I really think that there is a better way to crochet a Chrysanthemum flower.

If you had a better result I would love to see it.

I hope you are having a wonderful day filled with love and laughter. Be well My friends.

100 crochet flowers

I crochet everyday whether it is a single flower, a new hat, fun project, beard, or whatever fancy I found. I followed an inspriation on pinterest and found this free book on crochet flowers. I think it might be fifty of each knit and crochet flowers but I want to make one a day just to see if I can make all of them. Since I already have many time consuming hobbies I am not going to try the knited ones, yet.

If you would like to try to I posted the link. I don't know if you can post a picture in the comments or not. I would love to see your finished flowers. I plan on making hair clips or adding them to various projects. I like crocheting flowers because it is a quick project so I know that it will be finished when I stop. Plus it is a great way to use up some left over yarn.

I hope you have a wonderful day filled with love and laughter. Be well my friends.

Crochet dreams

I have been busy crocheting away avoiding my own school work which has put me in a last minute time crunch getting everything done. Yet here I am. So today will be a short post with pictures. So here are a few things that I have finished over the last week or so.

Flower clips. A little hot glue is amazing!

Remeber the last post with a weird green thing that was my sole.

The best part is these slippers are only half inch different in size (I had trouble keeping count I guess).

I made beards for my boys. I got the idea from http://calleighsclips.blogspot.com/

I love this picture

This is the same beard Damian is wearing but I love this man.

I have become obssessed with the idea of granny sqaures. This is my first one.

I tested a pattern to give myself an excuse to at least try. You see I have been afraid to try because I did not think I would be good enough.

I am happy to report that these are the same size. Which means if I wanted I could make a blanket.

I still have a couple of things on the burner that I will get done sometime. I am thinking about doing a little follow along blanket a sqaure a day. I will post the patterns where I can so you can make a blanket at home too. I like to do things with friends and it could be fun to make something together. I have to decide on the colors that I want to use but I have to confess I have already been searching the web for free granny square patterns so that I can share them with you. What do you think? Believe it or not these granny squares are easy to make, which makes crocheting the sqaures to go by quickly. Well I need to get back to my own school work....

I hope you are having a wonderful day filled with love and laughter. Be well my friends.
